So I play bass guitar at church, and this Sunday we’re playing Build Your Kingdom Here by Rend Collective (catchy song really). Anyways, we play with an audio track (no percussionist) which includes this curious instrument, a stomp fiddle/pogo cello/party fiddle/etc.

Kinja'd!!!

I had to look it up, but you play it by bouncing it on the floor on the downbeat; and if you want to be awesome, hitting the wood block, bells, etc during the upbeat. It’s pretty epic, and dare I say metal, to watch.

Of course, the bass for this song plays on the downbeat too, so I have to sync my playing with the recording. We all wear headphones and have a small mixer, so all I hear is this stomp fiddle in my ear as I play along.

Anyways, this just proves folk music is awesome.

That is a fantastic song, one of the best CCM songs out there right now. Some other bands (notably Casting Crowns) do a lot of minimalist and creative percussion stuff in their live sets. I just recently got into CCM again after a long time and I’m thrilled at how much great stuff is out there. For a long time, it was always like “yeah, they’re pretty good...for a Christian band.” Now a lot of them are world-class for any genre.

It's like a tambourine that you stab the ground with. The music video for the song is a great demonstration of it, the guy is just going crazy, it's amazing.

Nice! I wonder it the stick is hollow to make the bass sounds though.

Maybe I should give CCM another chance then? Lol. I listen to Christian music, but it’s usually the punk or metal stuff. Been listening to a lot of August Burns Red and Project 86 as of late.

Actually, we’re playing a bunch of known songs this Sunday; Your grace is enough, love the lord, your love oh lord, o for a thousand tongues, and draw me near. Those last two...are interesting chord wise, lol.

Rend Collective, Needtobreathe, Third Day, some of the newer MercyMe. I’m much more willing to listen to “poppier” type of stuff if it’s lyrically solid and catchy. I still need to check out those bands you recommended.

Flatfoot 56? Definitely. They have pretty solid lyrics too, imo. Not always Christian oriented, but a lot of self discovery and the hardships of life, which is what I like to hear. :)

Thankfully no, but we’ll have two female vocalist singing it this Sunday. Speaking of female vocalists, I think it’s funny there’s only one in the band, a token if you will, and she changes her hair color almost every song it seems, lol.

Prince mastered that one, too.
